Birthday Parties: The Joy, The Chaos, and the Countdown to the End

This weekend we hosted a double birthday party.

Yep. Two kids. One day. Two themes. One very tired mom.
The idea sounded smart at the time—two separate celebrations in one block of time to avoid sibling drama and party overload. Spoiler: it didn’t exactly work that way.
They tortured each other.
I’m not kidding when I say I was counting down the minutes until it was time for it to be over.
Here’s the thing—I genuinely love planning parties. Picking the theme, getting the decorations just right, making it all special for them? I enjoy that part.
But the moment the party starts? Boom. Adrenaline city.
Is everyone happy? Did anyone miss cake? Is someone crying? Are my kids being nice? Did I forget to put out the napkins? Wait—has anyone even eaten? Why is the ground sticky?
It’s like I enter this mental checklist spiral and can’t turn it off until the last balloon is popped and the cake is officially reduced to crumbs.
This year we did a water party, which should be easy, right?
Wrong. 😂
If you’re braver than me and thinking of going that route, these water party items were lifesavers:
(These are affiliate links I used to entertain the crews)!
👉 Reusable Water Balloons: Seriously-Game Changer. We are water balloon people. These are amazing. and I don't have to pick up millions of balloon bits afterwards.
👉 Pack of 18 water shooter sticks- I mean 18 is an amazing number and send these bad boys home as party favors since you most likely won't need 18 at once again. :)
Now on to keeping the pre-teens busy:
👉Shrinky-Dinks: I can't say enough about these. Always a great time! They are adorable and offer so many options and creative outlets for kiddos!
👉Clay bead kits: These truly were more fun than I thought. The girls had a great time making a matching one and then being creative and making special ones on their own.
👉 Silicone Beads for Keychains: OBSESSED! I did go a little crazy and buy a bunch of focal beads as well but they would have made 100 of these if it wasn't late when they got started.
I know this post sounds dramatic, but I also know I’m not the only one who feels this way.
Birthday parties are hard. They’re emotional. They’re chaotic. They’re messy.
But we still do them—because we love our kids and we want them to feel celebrated.
So if you’ve ever cried in the bathroom during your kid’s party, snuck a cupcake while hiding in the kitchen, or whispered “never again” while sweeping confetti off your floor—you’re not alone.
We’re in this together. And next year? I might just rent a party room and show up with cupcakes and a smile. 🎉
